This is an edit of a spinoff of a much older fanfiction story from Nabari no Ou, found here (Life After Death: Part 1).
The original, non edited version of the spinoff can be found here ([fic] life after death - hot chocolate/memories?), on my very first livejournal.

I highly advise you read the MAIN STORY first, otherwise there are spoilers. Prior knowledge of the Nabari no Ou is not mandatory.

It was late at night and Yoite and Haruki had just arrived in the cabin. They had just begun to rest when Akikaze briefly knocked on the door and let himself in. Haruki was overjoyed and the two had a wonderful reunion. They slept together that night. Yoite visited Miharu's grave the next day, bringing flowers and even having a talk with his grave.

"Good evening, Miharu." Yoite set marigolds atop the snowy grave and shoved his hands into his trench coat pockets. "It might not look like I've changed, but I have. Thanks to you, I've opened up to the world." He smiled a sad smile and tried to hold back his tears. "You prepared me for Haruki-- is how I'd like to think of it. You probably wanted to take me to where I am today, didn't you?" He bent down and gently caressed the gravestone, wiping some snow aside.

It was a crude gravestone, the name [MIHARU] chiselled foolishly with a hammer some years ago. "I'm sorry... that I wasn't able to save you, Miharu." Quickly, his hand went from the gravestone to his eyes and wiped away the tears that were threatening to spill over. "I still... haven't moved on from you, if that makes you happy..." Yoite froze for a moment, but then continued on with his sad smile, "It probably doesn't, does it?" He laughed gently and fell back on his butt, the cold snow melting and wetting his clothes. "But, you know what?" He laughed again and this time a happier smile came upon his lips. "I care about so many things now, my feelings for you are somewhat small." He sat up. "I admit I'm a bit ashamed. But, the world is so full of life, so full of things I've never noticed before. The training wheels are off now, and I don't need you." He shrugged and stood. "But I still want you." There was a pause--

"Hey! Yoite! Don't stay out too long! You'll catch a cold!" Akikaze shouted from the front door of the cabin some metres away. "If you get sick Haruki's going to worry over you!" Yoite smiled.

"I think about you every single day, Miharu. But thoughts of you keep getting washed away by the life that surrounds me." Yoite turned to Akikaze. "I understand, Akikaze-kun! I'll be just a few minutes!" He faced the gravestone again, kneeled forward, and kissed it. "Goodbye, Miharu. I still love you."

Now, the three were soundlessly asleep in their beds. The only sound came from the cat clock Haruki bought on one of her and Yoite's travels over the years. Then, suddenly, a loud bang came from the kitchen. Haruki woke up first and immediately got out of bed, not even remembering that Akikaze was in bed with her. She crept down the steps and into the kitchen to see Yoite. "What? Yoite? What are you doing up so late? It's, like... three?" She looked at the kitchen alarm clock.

"I'm sorry, I wanted some milk..." Yoite mumbled and shook the glass bottle of milk in his hands, a sheepish grin on his face. Haruki laughed and snatched the milk from him.

"I'll make some hot cocoa. Go start the fire." He nodded and left. A few minutes later, Haruki came out of the kitchen with two mugs of milk and cocoa powder. She hung them over the fire and then fell back on the loveseat next to Yoite. "Well, then. Tell me why you woke up in the first place. More troubling Miharu dreams?" He shook his head. "Then what?"

"They weren't about Miharu." Haruki stared at him inquisitively.

"Then what happened? Who was burning this time?" Slowly, he looked away from the fire to Haruki's eyes.

"You." Haruki froze up, opened her mouth, then closed it. She, too, looked at the fire for a moment, then down at her fumbling hands. Yoite laughed. "It's just a dream, right? It doesn't mean anything. It doesn't have to."

"You're... right. It doesn't have to. But, you know, Yoite, for precaution, Akikaze and I are very much in love." Yoite laughed at the slight blush on Haruki's cheeks. She only got like this, Yoite noticed, when she talked about her and Akikaze's relationship.

"Yes, I know. It probably just means I've finally accepted you as family." Haruki laughed.

"Finally?" she repeated and the two laughed.

"Hey, what's going on?" Akikaze growled in a fake angry voice as he took heavy steps down the stairs. Haruki smiled slyly.

"It's nothing you should worry about, my love." She arched her neck back and the two kissed.

"Is that hot cocoa I smell?" He sat on the armrest next to Haruki and glanced toward the fire.

"Yep. Would you like me to make you some?"

"Yes, please!" Haruki laughed before getting up and leaving for the kitchen. Akikaze slid into her previous seat and leaned closer to Yoite. "You know, Yoite, if you ever make a move on Haru-chan, you're dead, right? I don't care if you have that oh-so-magical 'kira' thing; you're dead meat." Yoite grinned. He knew how much Akikaze loved Haruki, he could feel it.

"Of course, Akikaze-kun. Haruki is all yours." Akikaze roughened up Yoite's hair and pulled him into a rough man hug.

"That'ta sport!"

"What are you two chatting about? I'm who's?" Haruki came out of the kitchen with a mug and placed it above the fire. She took the other two mugs off and handed one to Yoite.

"Mine!" Akikaze sang confidently. Haruki let out a short tut.

"Scoot." She patted Akikaze's shoulder.

"Nope." He patted his lap and Haruki sighed before sitting on Akikaze's lap. "That'ta girl." She blushed.

"Shh!" He and Yoite laughed at Haruki's reddened cheeks. Akikaze took Haruki's mug from her fingers and sipped from it. "Noo!" She wailed with embarrassment. When it was handed back to her, she frowned to see half of it gone. "I'm taking half of yours, Akki!" They laughed.
